Film Review : Hell Of A Summer (2025)

After showing in film fests in 2023, Hell Of A Summer finally got a release in theaters and I half understand why it took so long.

Hell Of A Summer is a fantastic example of previews along with press quotes in it showcasing a film entirely different than what it is. The previews for this make this seem like a super fun gory slasher film. Instead we get a coming of age comedy where the story line just happens to be a slasher.

We follow a group of young adults, one being an mid 20s man who is on his 8th year at camp, the week before summer camp opens up as they start their leadership activities to prepare. After one gets murdered though they soon start to believe there is a killer on the loose.

While the humor here has its hits and misses with some being very laugh out loud level lines, its very adolescent hinted which at least works with the era they are going for here. Its just too bad the slasher element never matches. The story here with that just sort of fizzles out into an unsatisfying end and we really don’t even get good kills. From the start kills are mostly done off screen with either no after shot or just a brief one showing what happened. If they cut the language here this could have likely been a PG13 film honestly.

Like I said before, the humor here sometimes works. Most characters are fairly likable too. At the end I never felt anyone really had a solid ending to go with it but it just feels like sometimes they aren’t in the same slasher film it has going for it.

Hell Of A Summer will likely go unseen by most. Its a decent comedy hidden under a widely misused and somewhat lame slasher angle and because of this neither side never reaches its full potential.
