The Dead Daises reunite with Glenn Hughes for special show at the Arcada

Dead Daisies (Arcada)

Saturday night at the Arcada was the place to be for a once-in-a-lifetime show that was as close to an arena-level performance as this reviewer has ever seen in that setting: The Dead Daisies, back with Glenn Hughes on bass and vocals, delivering a one-two punch set that saw Daisies’ material followed by a set of nothing but classic Deep Purple.

If it sounds epic on paper, it was more epic than could have been imagined in person. The Dead Daisies—guitarists Doug Aldrich and David Lowy, with powerhouse drummer Tommy Clufetos raising the bar with each and every song—are already tight as hell, and with Hughes back in the fold even for just one night, the band’s chemistry is undeniable. Opener “Holy Ground,” the anthemic chorus of “Born to Fly,” and the heavy metal-crunch of “Radiance” all sounded monstrous in a venue the size of the Arcada, and a stomping cover of “Fortunate Son” was both timely and raucous, but it was the second set that really took things to new places.

Seeing Hughes revisit territory he helped create over fifty years ago was amazing to consider as the band grooved through “Sail Away” and “Might Just Save Your Life” from 1974’s Burn (Hughes’ first effort with the band), and he couldn’t have been more appreciative, taking time out between songs to thank the crowd numerous times throughout the night. The stalwarts of classic rock radio like “Highway Star” and “Smoke on the Water” sounded fresh thanks to Aldrich’s stellar solo work (if he isn’t one of the most underrated rock guitarists out there, I don’t know who is) and Hughes’ incredible vocal range reached a fever pitch with a blinding rendition of “Mistreated.” By the time the band returned for an encore of “Long Way to Go” and a relentless version of “Burn,” it’s hard to say who was sadder to see it end—the crowd or the band, who’ve promised that the “Purple Daisies,” as their backdrop proclaimed, was a one-off event for those fortunate enough to have been there.
