Greta Van Fleet play special intimate Chicago show

For ninety minutes on Friday night at the Metro, the capacity crowd got a reminder of what no- frills rock n’ roll sounds like as Michigan quartet Greta Van Fleet played a hotly-anticipated Lollapalooza after-show.

Greta Van Fleet are a band that should give any rock fan hope for the future of the genre; while many artists over the last couple of decades have talked about how ‘rock is dead,’ nothing could be further from the truth, though it is true that the bands who crafted the classic rock sounds—the Zeppelins and AC/DCs of the world—don’t seem to have a lot of direct counterparts in the modern day. And while the Zeppelin comparisons have certainly been made, Greta Van Fleet has established a strong musical identity of their own, which promises to expand even further with the forthcoming record Palace for the People.

Taking the stage to a pair of bangers from their earliest days—the groovy “Highway Tune” and “Safari Song,” an arena-sized anthem if ever there was one—guitarist Jake Kiszka brought tremendous rock-star energy from start to finish, and vocalist Josh Kiszka strutted and stalked the stage with oversized glasses, taking in the rabid crowd who sang and screamed along to every word. The twelve-song set saw one new song (“Saw You Stand”) and a seemingly- endless span of singalong choruses, though no one in the room could likely hit those highs like Kiszka.

“This song is a bit of an adventure,” he noted, introducing “Meeting the Master,” one of the night’s moodier highlights, and “Black Smoke Rising” saw a lot of playful interaction between the three Kiszka brothers, who clearly love being onstage together (while drummer Danny Wagner is a subtle powerhouse as well). Indeed, at times the Metro felt too small to contain the band’s energy, which is always the sign of a great show and great musicians. Lollapalooza is one thing—but seeing a band like Greta Van Fleet in a venue as historic and intimate as the Metro is another kind of emotional experience entirety for any music fan.
