Film Review : The Devil’s Mouth (2026)

The Devil’s Mouth proves two things. PG-13 modern shark movies don’t really work and Kathryn Newton is a cheat code for movies.

We follow a group of friends on a trip to Thailand before they all go their separate ways it seems. Relationships and moving for jobs have the friends slowly cracking it seems and this is their emotional goodbye as adulthood looms ahead.

After signing up for a tour through a connected series of caves named ‘The Devil’s Mouth’, the group soon find out that a bull shark has somehow infiltrated the cave system and they are trapped with it.

Sadly though this film seemed to kick off acting as if it wasn’t a shark film. There is no opening kill instead just giving us character building which would be fine if there was any substance to most of them. We get a bunch of unlikable friends, a smart one, and an overbearing one. Thats where it ends with them really. Even young genre favorite Kathryn Newtons instant likability is put to its test around a cast who just suck the life out of the film.

With the film being PG-13 we forgo really any gory kills and outside of one kill, everything else is seemingly off screen mostly. The cave settling is cool though until you realize its also a downfall of the film. Oddly enough the shark isn’t around for extended periods of time until the moment where they need the tension there. Otherwise it seems to just go nap somewhere. Thankfully we don’t get to see many full shots of it either because it looks like a cheap FX effect and the climax of the film becomes laughable with what happens.

Overall is it the worst shark movie I’ve seen this year, shockingly no. It is however just bland and worst of all, boring.
