At 3:45 AM pacific time, a plane crashed into a San Diego neighborhood. The plane is confirmed to have belonged to talent agent and Sound Talent Group owner Dave Shapiro and was carrying other industry members, including former drummer of The Devil Wears Prada Daniel Williams. Sadly, Shapiro and Williams have been confirmed dead as the music scene mourns.
“We are devastated by the loss of our co-founder, colleagues and friends,” a spokesperson for Sound Talent Group said in a statement. “Our hearts go out to their families and to everyone impacted by today’s tragedy. Thank you so much for respecting their privacy at this time.”
Authorities have confirmed six people were aboard the plane, but only the above two have been identified. The crash also damaged around 10 structures in the Murphy Canyon area, police said, setting multiple homes, some belonging to military families, and cars on fire while spilling fuel everywhere.
Around 100 residents in the impacted area were quickly evacuated. A temporary evacuation center has been established at Miller Elementary School, located at 4343 Shields St., to assist displaced residents. Though initially reporting that no one on the ground was injured, police updated the public shortly after 11 a.m., explaining that at least five people were hospitalized for smoke inhalation. At least three others were also treated for minor injuries.
The jet took off Wednesday night from Teterboro Airport in New Jersey, just outside of New York City, and landed in Wichita, Kansas, on Thursday morning, according to flight data associated with the tail number posted on FlightAware. It stayed in Kansas for about an hour and was supposed to land at Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport in San Diego later that morning.
A federal source familiar with the matter confirmed the tail number of the plane with NBC News. The plane was a Cessna C550 made in 1985, according to data from the Federal Aviation Administration.
