Gymnastics kick off in Utah with the Sprouts Collegiate Quad

On January 10th, the Maverik Center hosted one of the most competitive meets in NCAA gymnastics. The Sprouts Collegiate Quad kicked off its double round meet welcoming Oklahoma, LSU, UCLA, and hometown favorite Utah Red Rocks for the first session. Later hosting Michigan, California, Michigan State and Kentucky. While the final standing for the first session placed Utah fourth, the night was nothing short of standout performances and engaging crowds.

The meet is set up so that two people are going at once, with everyone going on a rotating basis. The events consist of the balance beam, the floor routine, uneven bars and the vault. Utah specifically struggled with the balance beam, while they still performed well there were small moments of wobbling and inability to connect that took small marks off their overall score. The vault is where Utah truly showed their best work, Avery Neff showed her best by showing a perfect 10. This happened to be the first of the NCAA season which drew a big reaction from the crowd and her teammates.

The Oklahoma Sooners had a great night as well. Their team was very deliberate and refined in their performance. Their balance beam routines were especially notable and overall they took home the first place trophy for the event after winning a tie breaker from LSU. The LSU tigers were so fun to watch as they dominated the floor routine. The tigers had great personality and really brought a fun energy to the evening. Not to be forgotten, the UCLA Bruins left everything on the floor. My favorite event to watch from them was the uneven bars. While there were a few wobbles in the finishes they showed a nice flow in their performance.

The meet results for the first session were;

1. Oklahoma – 197.500

2. LSU – 197.500 (lost tiebreaker)

3. UCLA – 197.000

4. Utah – 195.900

The second session drew a slightly smaller crowd due to no local schools, but each school still brought a following with them to cheer them on. The afternoon session consisted of the Michigan State Spartans, the Kentucky Wildcats, the California Golden Bears and the Michigan Wolverines. The Wolverines won the night, with their most notable performance being on the balance beam. The Bears who came in second place shined specifically on the bars with the Spartans coming in third and the Wildcats taking fourth.

4. Kentucky – 194.925

With the Sprouts Collegiate Quad over, fans can get excited for the gymnastics season to continue. From a personal perspective I was impressed by the fans this weekend. As fans from all over wore their gear and cheered on their team. I was also impressed with howcomposed and supportive they were when other teams were competing, equally cheering on everyone no matter the team. Likewise, I loved how the teams all supported each other. Utah’s team specifically was always there to cheer on their fellow teammate, be there for them when the routine didn’t go as hoped and high-five them after an amazing routine
