If the rest of Don’t Move was as insane as the opening of the movie, we’d have a hit. Sadly Don’t Move can’t find its groove too much.
We follow Megan, who after a tragic accident loses her husband and son, finally decides to do something and goes on a church retreat with a few others to camp out in the woods. Along with the pastor, the bus driver, the pastors daughter and her new boyfriend, a boy and his grandparents, and the towns trouble case, they soon start their hike.
Soon though when two of them go off on their own for a hike back to the bus they get attacked by a car sized spider that quickly starts to go after the entire camp.
It really needs to be stated how fantastic this opening scene is. The theme of the movie is grief and we get to see the situation that resulted in Megan losing her family before her eyes and its brutal. I just wish the rest of the movie followed suit. Once we find the giant spider the films pacing is just all over the place. We get off camera kills with characters that aren’t really ever mentioned again or even shown on screen.
Its also that the film can’t find what it wants to be. Does it want to be serious and about grief or does it want to be humorous other things. The film isn’t funny but it tackles the grief parts well. It may be in part that our trouble case, Ricky Vargas, has such a major part in this too. He starts off as the bad guy only coming on this to hide drugs and has his redemption arc. It just feels forced sometimes as instead of being the unlikable back character who gets his chance to fix things he is given a near co-leading spot which takes the shine off of Megans grief filled arc.
The spider itself though isn’t doing anything great either. The CGI looks shoddy at best most times with a few practical scenes looking decent though. The killers are boring or quick as well which leads to most of the movie just being them walking through things hoping we don’t see it.
We never get any sort of inking where there is a massive spider either, its just there. That doesn’t even get into what might be the worst end of film scene I’ve seen in years to cap the movie off either.
Even with a cast of more known side characters who are fine if not just cannon fodder in the end, Don’t Move can’t find its footing. A fantastic opener and a solid grief angle can’t help save what boils down to a rather bland and boring at times spider horror film.
