Puddle of Mudd’s Midday Mayhem at Boardwalk Rock

When Puddle of Mudd hit the stage at 2 PM on a sun-soaked May 17, 2025, the Atlantic breeze was warm, the boardwalk humming with early festival energy. This initial day of the inaugural Boardwalk Rock Festival was only a few musical acts into the lineup, and despite the brightness, the band arrived with enough raw charm and lyrical grit to make the afternoon feel like early evening in spirit.

Boardwalk Rock at 2 PM is a unique animal. No neon glow, no floodlights, and nowhere to escape the blazing sun if you want to be at the barricade. The early afternoon crowd was diverse: teens, families, retirees, with none wanting to wait until after dark to scream, smile, and scream again. To their credit, Puddle of Mudd was ready and blasted it from minute one. No slow brew, just went from zero to instant adrenaline in 30 seconds.

Hailing from Kansas City, Puddle of Mudd exploded onto the scene in the early 2000s with jamming alt-rock riffs and suburban-angst lyrics.  Their debut album, Come Clean, in 2001, gave them hits out of the gate, and then they flamed out, rebuilt, and kept coming back.

Lead singer Wes Scantlin had on jeans, a bandana, and the most creative red T-shirt of the weekend. (The shirt said Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Slurpee, Big Gulp, Donner Blitzen,7 eleven.)  Scantlin leaned into the microphone like he was sharing a confession with an old friend. His voice cut through the midday warmth, as he prowled the stage with a relaxed posture, engaging the daylight crowd with an air of lived-in defiance.

Without dramatic lighting or smoke, we watched Scantlin sweat from the sun, guitars sweat with distortion, and drums sweat with heat. It felt raw, just like the lyrics to the songs.  Control, Psycho, Beautimous, and Drift and Die all cooked full throttle one into the next one.

They played eight songs in total in 45 minutes. No encore. No notion of covering time. Just the raw declaration that rock is loud, no matter when it happens. In the bright afternoon sun, Puddle of Mudd didn’t have to wait for dark to let things get real. In a festival built for late-night climaxes, they hit peak at 2 PM, proving that rock doesn’t need shadows—it just needs truth.
