Film Review : Ouija A New Beginning (2025)

Published

on

Well this is clearly made to make people think its related to the original set of bigger production Ouija films when instead this is just a super low budget snoozefest.

We follow a mom and 2 daughters on the run as they move in to stay at an extended family members house. Soon though one daughter gets a Ouija board and things start to go wrong.

Calling this a horror film is honestly a stretch at best. Its almost no horror at all or even jump scares instead we get endless dialog here with some of the worst acting I’ve seen lately. Everything either comes across super forced or just completely lifeless.

It doesn’t help the story here is boring. The Ouija part seems to take the backseat to a bad family drama where the twist happens and I couldn’t have cared less about what happens to anyone.

Theres low budget then theres stuff like this that just mooches off a semi established brand name in the genre. Avoid it.

Film Review: Superman (2025)

Published

on

2025 so far is proving to be a good fresh time for superhero films. With Thunderbolts being a fresh break for Marvel earlier this year now its time for DC with Superman. Having never been a big Superman fan in film this one proved me entirely wrong and made me one.

Its nice here too that we get to skip the entire origin story with most being kept to a quick message to start the film before throwing us feet first into it. Superman brings a sense of human to his other worldly self here and its refreshing to see a villain here in the form of Lex Luthor who actually feels evil. Its a beautiful contrast of someone who wants to even try and save someone or something that wants him dead vs someone who will openly kill anyone just to get to his target.

What else works though here so much is a wonderful side cast of characters. Jimmy Olsen and Lois Lane are joys here and played to perfection. Hawkgirl, Green Lantern, and Mr. Fantastic though almost steal the show here between their various personalities and action scenes.

The action here just works so well too. Its bright and colorful at times and when needed more dark and heavy. It mixes some humor in it with some gorgeous slow mo moments and scenes that will be revisited for years to come.

Corenswet though has become Superman. Going through every emotion here in this film he truly comes across as the man of steel with Brosnahan playing Lane to a peak performance as well. Bonus points goes out to Nathan Fillion for knocking it out as Guy Gardener. I hope in a sequel we get more of everyone. Extra bonus points to the bestest boy Krypto as well.

If you are completely done with the superhero genre this might not change your mind. Its easy enough for casual fans to love it and deep enough for the long time fans to get a kick out of things. The action and story will keep you involved as this slightly 2+ hour movie blew by in a breeze. Lets just hope DC and Gunn can keep this streak alive.

Film Review : Ice Road: Vengeance (2025)

Published

on

Whoever greenlit a straight to VOD sequel 4 years after a straight to Netflix film I have questions for. Especially considering this has no promotion behind it and that story wise, it really doesn’t have anything to do with the first.

We follow Mike from the first film who after his brother passes he goes to Nepal to spread them on a mountain only to run into local mercenaries attempting to take over a small village.

The film doesn’t even live up to its name even. It doesn’t follow the same Ice Road deal that made the first film at least have something unique and vengeance here doesn’t work really because our lead character just happenstance is in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Nothing here really redeems itself though. No character is particularly likable at all with all being generic with poorly wrote dialog. Our villain isn’t a threat at all really and seems rather clueless and we are plagued with some awful green screen at times.

This feels like something that would fit in with 80s straight to VHS action films. Liam seems to be fading as a fun action star and this just falls flat. Not exciting but not overtly unwatchable. Just a below average action film that will be forgotten about as quickly as it comes around.

Film Review : Fear Street: Prom Queen (2025)

Published

on

While I am happy we continue to get stuff like modern versions of Goosebumps and Fear Street, this sadly doesn’t even live up the previous Fear Street trilogy of films.

With only the mildest connection to the previous Fear Street Netflix films, Prom Queen follows Lori Granger, an outcast at her high school. Bullied and mocked because she doesn’t fit in and her mom supposedly murdered her dad, Lori’s only friend is Megan, a horror loving outcast as well. Nominated for Prom Queen though Lori wants a change to happen but soon they find out theres a killer on the loose at the prom.

The story here is pretty paint by numbers which is the main trait of this entire film. Everything comes off so bland and lifeless. Performances, dialog, and even the kills just feel so uneventful. While the kills are at least practical and some are a bit fun and bloody as the film goes on they feel less and less important.

Even the twist here is just a mood killer and horribly cliche’d. The films direction changes drastically and even this twist makes the story feel even less important here.

Prom Streets an easy watch as background noise really and I just hope that they continue doing Fear Street films but go back to doing quality films like the other ones were.

Film Review : Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (2025)

Published

on

This is almost a tough one to review. The final film in the Mission Impossible series is a part 2 following 2023s ‘Dead Reckoning’.

Continuing part one we find a world where an AI like creation is wrecking havoc on the world having taken over countries nukes with intent on causing the end of the world and the only people who can stop it are Ethan Hunt and his team. Its a somewhat convoluted story that throws almost way too much at the plate at times. We are given characters from the entire franchise here thrown in and out of the story at times. While some of that works often times it feels like filler almost.

The major issue though here is the films pacing. Pushing 3 hours long the first half of the movie feels like it moves at a snail pace mostly, especially compared to past films. Very heavy on flashbacks as well the film tries to keep you in the know but it comes at a price of feeling like I was watching way too many flashbacks.

That being said, the second half is an action fans dream. With some of the most over the top spectacles of the year for the genre Cruise and company once again prove they know how to do some insane stunts and action scenes. I forgot the entire time that Cruise is 62 with how he moves in these scenes.

It is a nice wrap up though for his side crew of characters as well here as Simon Pegg once again shines in his role. Ving Rhames, in his brief time, is always a pleasure as well.

If they could have just worked out the first half or so of this we’d be talking about a masterpiece. While its a great end to the franchise it falls slightly short of what could have been but it saved by a second half that will be talked about for years.

Film Review : Clown In A Cornfield (2025)

Published

on

Having never read the book, but knowing its praise, I was excited for Clown In A Cornfield and happy to see it was getting a wide theatrical release.

We follow a father and his high school daughter who move to a small town recently dealing with a fire that burned down ones of it biggest job providers. Soon though a clown, looking just like the towns biggest companies mascot, appears out of the cornfields though targeting the teenagers who may or may not be at fault for the accident.

The story here, even with the twist, works while still being somewhat paint by numbers. It throws its own twists and turns here and there to make it unique though. The first half plays like more of a teenage coming of age comedy at times before turning right into a slasher film.

It works though here due to the films R rating. Instead of doing what most studios would and putting a PG-13 rating in here to make it for a broader audience, we get a fun R rating here. Profanity and gore galore really does help.

What works too is a band of characters who are either so easy to love or hate and a mascot that if they do a sequel per book I bet stays around for quite some time.

While it doesn’t break any molds, Clown In A Cornfield is just fun. It has good kills, fun characters who I wanted to save and wanted to die, and just keeps it as a simple R rated slasher which is a nice break from the norm.
