Australian pop punk band 5 Seconds of Summer released their sixth album, Everyone’s a Star, earlier this month.
In a fun, intimate interview with Billboard News, the band chats about their new album at Barney’s Beanery. Calum dives in about the title Everyone’s a Star. He mentions that it’s a song they wrote in Nashville that encapsulates how they feel about their community within their fan base and the different versions of themselves throughout their 15 years as a band. Another inspiration for the name was when the band attended an AC/DC concert and noticed how almost all of their songs have phrases that you can latch on to.
Everyone’s a Star is edgy, experimental, and draws from artists like Gorillaz and The Prodigy. The band experimented with sequential synths and different grooves while incorporating punk influences. Ashton mentions that for this album, they aimed to get into their poetic space and explore new aspects of melodies. They emphasized finding the energy rather than fitting lyrics into a pre-existing melody.
In an interview with Airing Your Dirty Laundry, 5SOS have reclaimed the term ‘boyband.’ They embrace the things people say about them, the good and the bad, and encourage an open dialogue about the public’s perception of them. They aim to promote a deeper message of embracing oneself.
If you have been a longtime fan of 5SOS, you have seen them grow and really come into their own as solo artists and as a band. They embrace experimenting with their sound while still keeping true to themselves.
