I love myself a lower budget but well made mostly single location suspense film and Locked happily filled that desire.
Shot mostly inside a locked SVU, we follow Eddie who after breaking into a car to rob it, soon finds out that its been a trap set up from a stranger named William. Communicating through the in car system William is determined to right wrongs in his life with his own form of justice that would come onto whoever decided to break into his car.
Bill Skarsgård must love playing tattoo’d guys as he’s our lead here covered in bad tattoos. He plays a down on his luck simple criminal looking for the money to get his car back to try to rebuild a relationship with his young daughter and ex. For being alone most scenes he is great at portraying a wide range of emotions throughout his torturous time. Anthony Hopkins though does fantastic as our older villain here. With a backstory of grief that has morphed into an altered outlook on the world, he plays it great. Though only on screen for a short amount of time, his voice alone helps carry this.
Its a tense and simple movie that tries to give out a message about events in the world and how we treat others and it somewhat works. Sometimes dialog in here feels super out of place like it was shoehorned in for modern times. Towards the end as well it has some poor looking CGI effects in this as well. At roughly 90 minutes the film doesn’t overstay its welcome but at times feels like it could have used a cut of two.
For what it is though, it works. It has its tense moments and the two leads here play their roles great. While it isn’t groundbreaking, its certainly enjoyable.
