Marc Rebillet brings energy and crowd participation to Madison (for maybe the first and last time)

Marc Rebillet, Loop Daddy, that crazy guy that makes beats in his living room while wearing a robe; however you may know him, made the long awaited decision to grace the stage of The Sylvee in Madison, WI for his “Places I’ve Never Played and Will Never Play Again Tour”. If it is true that he will never play here again, that meant I could not miss this show.

All I know of Marc Rebillet is from what I have seen from his viral videos on Youtube and TikTok. Even before entering the venue, I was greeted by fan after fan donning Rebillet’s signature choice of wardrobe, a knee length bathrobe with nothing more than underwear underneath. It was clear that this was a crowd that came to party. A nearly packed house filled the room from front to back eagerly waiting for their Loop Daddy to take the stage.

The house lights went down, the stage lights bathed the assortment of inflatable decorations that surrounded Rebillet’s loop station with light, and out came Marc to a thunderous roar of excited cheers. The moment he came out to the stage, I already had the feeling that this was going to be the type of show loaded with crowd interactions. After spending only a couple of minutes building one of his fully improvised beats on the fly, he hopped right down to the barricade to start taking ideas for the next line of the song that he was building. Front and center, or up along the side rails of the venue, no one was excluded from this shared experience.

The wild antics did not let up for the duration of the night. Fans getting up on stage to lend a hand to the loops, staged bits featuring Rebillet’s friends in Capyac, and taking requests from the crowd for some of the songs that led to his viral status, the show was just non-stop fun. There were tons of high energy dance beats to crank the party to 11, but then also enough chill moments for the crowd to catch their breath and take in the craft of building music. Every one of his shows is a unique experience thanks to the improvised nature of the music. To be able to craft a fun and exciting show night after night is a truly impressive skill that Rebillet has mastered.

Maybe he’ll never play Madison again, or maybe he will, if his admission of actually coming back is true, but either way a couple thousand devoted fans can say that they got to experience this once in a lifetime show that will never be recreated. This night was there’s and there’s alone, and they will forever have that amazing memory.
